How To Play

Master the Flow of Battle

In Edge Quest, combat is not a simple back-and-forth of static turns. It is a fluid exchange of movement, strategy, and decisive action—a dynamic duel where every decision carries weight.

If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping into the shoes of a master duelist, reading your opponent’s intentions, and striking at the perfect moment, Edge Quest brings that experience to the tabletop in an unparalleled way.

1.

Construct Phase

Readying for Battle

Players build their hands in the Construct Phase, which represents the combatants gathering their thoughts, focusing their minds, and determining what techniques are available to them.

2.

Outwit Phase

Focusing The Mind, Seizing Control

In the Outwit Phase, players make a critical decision to retain more techniques for flexibility, or discard some techniques to gain Edge, the most valuable resource in the combat.

Every card discarded removes two possible techniques from a combatant’s arsenal in exchange for Edge Tokens, which provide key advantages. The more Edge a combatant has, the more control they gain over Rank Order and the battle’s tempo.

3.

Maneuver Phase

The Duel Begins

Combatants now step, shift, and reposition—jockeying for the best position before blades clash. The Maneuver Phase is where fighters establish their opening tempo—whether it be aggressive, cautious, or calculated.

4.

Battle Phase

Blades Clash, Decisions Matter

The fight is in full motion. Every strike, defense, and tactical adjustment unfolds in the Battle Phase, where combatants execute techniques and react to their opponent’s actions.

The higher ranked combatant acts first, playing a technique—whether an attack, footwork maneuver, or tactical action. If they launch an attack, their opponent has a chance to respond immediately. A well-timed defense may deflect the blow, while a cunning combatant might turn the tables with a counterattack, shifting the momentum in their favor.

After this flurry of exchanges, the next-ranked combatant takes their action, continuing the sequence until all battles are resolved and it’s time to assess the outcome.

Order of Actions Matter:

  • Rank 1 acts first, setting the tempo and forcing their opponent to react. However, acting first is not always an advantage—sometimes, the combatant who plays second gains the upper hand, reacting with precision and turning their opponent’s aggression against them.
  • The defender must choose wisely—block, evade, counterattack, or maneuver into a better position.
  • Winning an engagement can open the door for a follow-up attack, while a well-timed defense may shift control of the fight.
Every engagement is a tactical puzzle—choosing the right move at the right time can mean the difference between seizing victory or exposing yourself to defeat.

5.

Assessment Phase

Who Controls The Fight?

After a series of clashes, the combatants pause for a split second, reassessing their position and momentum. The Assessment Phase determines whether the fight will continue at full tempo or shift into a momentary reset.

The Assessment Phase ensures that momentum is not dictated by artificial turn structure but by player decisions. Combatants who maintain the pressure can deny their opponent a reset, while those who weather the storm can force a transition and regain control.

6.

Transition Phase

A Moment To Reset

Just as in real combat, a duel does not maintain a constant flurry of attacks. There are moments when both fighters pause, reposition, and prepare for the next exchange.

This phase represents a break in tempo—a moment where the fighters step back, reassess their approach, and prepare for the next clash.

Real Combat Strategy

Why The Combat Process Feels Real

What makes Edge Quest’s Combat Process so compelling is that it mirrors real dueling psychology:
  • Preparation and focus before action.
  • The advantage of controlling movement and reacting last.
  • The strategic back-and-forth of attack, defense, and counterplay.
  • The ability to control the fight’s tempo through Rank and Edge.
  • Moments of explosive action punctuated by brief pauses before re-engagement.
This is not a game where turns alternate in a predictable manner. Edge Quest captures the unpredictability and depth of real combat, rewarding players who can read their opponent, adapt their strategy, and execute the perfect technique at the right time.

Every duel tells a story of skill, decision-making, and tactical mastery. Will you be the one to dictate the flow of battle and claim victory?
